Playing Experience
I’ve played soccer since the age of 7 in Ireland, reach intermediate level at age 17 (one level below professional), still playing today at a casual level.
How would you describe your coaching philosophy and approach to player development?
I believe coaching is about helping players improve both technically and personally. My philosophy is to create a positive, competitive environment where players feel supported, challenged, and motivated to grow.
I focus on developing strong fundamentals, game intelligence, teamwork, and confidence. Every player develops at a different pace, so I try to understand each player's strengths and areas for improvement while giving them opportunities to succeed.
I want my team to play with effort, discipline, and respect. Winning is important, but long-term player development, enjoyment of the game, and building good habits are even more important. My goal is for players to leave each season as better athletes, better teammates, and more confident individuals.
What do you believe is the most important thing young players should learn from the game?
I believe the most important thing young players should learn from the game is how to work hard, be part of a team, and handle both success and adversity. Soccer teaches players that improvement comes through effort, discipline, and a willingness to keep learning.
The game also helps young players build confidence, communication skills, respect for others, and resilience when things do not go their way. Those lessons are valuable not only on the field, but in school, work, and life.
What excites you most about coaching in FC Ellicott City?
Helping players grow, both individually and as a group. Creating a positive team culture, and see them gain confidence over the course of the season. Most importantly is seeing my players enjoy the game.
What do you hope players take away from their experience playing for your team?
I hope players leave with more confidence, stronger teamwork skills, and a love for the game, while feeling they improved both on and off the field.
